If you've just bought a new car, you need to tax it before you can drive it the road.
You have to pay road tax directly to the DVLA – either on its website, by phone or at the Post Office. Here’s how to tax your car online:
1️⃣ Visit the DVLA website
Go to the DVLA website to start the process.
2️⃣ Answer ‘No’ to the tax reminder question
The website will ask: "Do you have a tax reminder letter (V11) printed in your name?" You need to select 'No' as you’ll be using a different document.
3️⃣ Select the ‘V5C/2 new keeper supplement (green slip)’ option
When prompted to choose the document you have, select 'I have the V5C/2 new keeper supplement (green slip)'.
This is the temporary 12-digit V5 reference number you get after buying your car.
4️⃣ Enter your vehicle registration details (number plate)
You’ll need to provide:
- The vehicle registration number (number plate). This can be found in your ‘My Account' area or in your order confirmation email.
- The 12-digit V5 reference number, which can be found in the email we sent you: "What happens now your order's confirmed?".
5️⃣ Complete your payment
Follow the on-screen instructions to pay for your road tax. The amount due will depend on your vehicle’s emissions and fuel type. You can choose to pay:
- Annually
- Every six months
- Monthly via Direct Debit
If your tax is free, you won't have to pay anything.
Other ways to tax your car
If you prefer to tax your car by phone, you can call the DVLA’s automated line (📞 0300 123 4321).
Make sure you have your car’s registration number (number plate) and the 12-digit V5 reference number ready. Follow the instructions to pay in full with your card.
📌 Important: The 12-digit V5 reference number provided is only valid until the day of delivery or collection (inclusive). After this, the DVLA will register the car in your name, and the reference number will change. You’ll then get a new V5 in the post.
