Luxury car tax (expensive car supplement)
If your car was registered on or after 1 April 2017 and cost more than £40,000 new, you might need to pay the ‘luxury car tax’ (also called the ‘expensive car supplement’).
The luxury car tax applies for five years from the second year a car worth over £40,000 new is on the road (i.e. years two to six).
From 1 April 2025, the luxury car tax is £425 per year (previously £410) on top the standard road tax rate of £195 (previously £190).
Electic car road tax (from 1 April 2025)
⚡ Electric cars are exempt from paying road tax (includind luxury car tax) until 31 March 2025. From 1 April 2025, electric cars will pay:
- Standard rate road tax (£195) from the second year of registration.
- Luxury car tax (an additional £425) from the second year of registration (for cars worth more than £40,000 new)
- New electric cars registered on or after 1 April 2025 will pay £10 first-year road tax, and then the standard rate (and luxury car tax for years two to six, if applicable) from then on.
